| PhD in Anthropology
A student accepted into the PhD program may choose one of the four subfields of anthropology as a field of concentration: cultural anthropology, archaeology, physical anthropology, and linguistic anthropology.
Students in the doctoral program may, if other requirements are met, obtain an MA degree by presenting a satisfactory thesis, by achieving outstanding performance on the qualifying examination, or by achieving doctoral candidacy. To qualify for doctoral candidacy, the student must have passed the comprehensive examination and have completed additional requirements. The additional requirements include demonstrating competence in basic statistics, passing an oral examination on suitable topics of specialization, demonstrating a reading knowledge of two foreign languages, and presenting an acceptable dissertation prospectus.
Admission to the graduate program in anthropology requires that the applicant meet the general requirements for admission. All applicants must take at their own expense the General Test of the Graduate Record Examination, but admission to the anthropology program does not require the Graduate Record Examination in a subject field.
Applicants wishing to earn a PhD in anthropology from Tulane should apply for admission to the doctoral program whether or not they already have an MA in anthropology.
