Graduate Studies

PhD in Anthropology
A student accepted into the PhD program may choose one of the four subfields of anthropology as a field of concentration: cultural anthropology, archaeology, physical anthropology, and linguistic anthropology.

Students in the doctoral program may, if other requirements are met, obtain an MA degree by presenting a satisfactory thesis, by achieving outstanding performance on the qualifying examination, or by achieving doctoral candidacy. To qualify for doctoral candidacy, the student must have passed the comprehensive examination and have completed additional requirements. The additional requirements include demonstrating competence in basic statistics, passing an oral examination on suitable topics of specialization, demonstrating a reading knowledge of one foreign language, and presenting an acceptable dissertation prospectus.

Admission to the graduate program in anthropology requires that the applicant meet the general requirements for admission. All applicants must take at their own expense the General Test of the Graduate Record Examination, but admission to the anthropology program does not require the Graduate Record Examination in a subject field.

Applicants wishing to earn a PhD in anthropology from Tulane should apply for admission to the doctoral program whether or not they already have an MA in anthropology. When having your GRE scores submitted to us, the School Code is 6183 and the Institution Code is 1701. To download a Graduate Program application form, you may click here .  Application deadline for Fall admission is February 1st.

4+1 Master's in Anthropology

A student wishing to apply for the 4+1 Master's degree should print out the application and bring it along with the $50.00 application fee to Susan Chevalier, Executive Secretary, in 101 Dinwiddie Hall. To download a Master's Program application form, you may click here
