GUIDELINES FOR THE PREPARATION OF DISSERTATION PROSPECTUSES

October 1989

The Graduate School requires that the dissertation prospectus be “about three pages in length.” In the Anthropology Department, this is usually interpreted to mean a maximum of seven pages, including bibliography. The student may be requested to prepare a longer draft prospectus for the prospectus committee and later reduce it to conform to the guidelines of the Graduate School.

The prospectus should include (1) a statement of the problem (2) a brief summary of earlier work on the problem, (3) the plan for the investigation, including the major sources and data to be used and the methodology to be employed, and (4) a statement of the expected results of the investigation. Recent history of the Department has suggested that (3), which is the research design, is regarded as an extremely important part of the prospectus and should be prepared with care.

Students writing a dissertation on archaeology are required to submit a draft prospectus to the members of their committee at least two months (eight weeks) before the prospectus defense is scheduled, so that the intervening time can be used for working with the committee on producing an acceptable prospectus. There is no such requirement for students specializing in sociocultural anthropology, linguistics, and physical anthropology.

All students must give each and every member of the Departmental faculty (including Dr. Andrews at MARI) a copy of the prospectus at least three business days before the prospectus defense is to take place. For example, if the defense is scheduled for a Tuesday at 3:00 p.m., then copies of the prospectus are due in the hands of the faculty before 3:00 p.m. on the preceding Thursday.
